A Few Thoughts Regarding Casting

And I say a few thoughts because many, many thousands of words have already been written on casting, by numerous qualified, competent casting experts. I won’t revisit that ground. Let me advise instead that you use your old pal Google and query up videos for “fly casting” (I personally recommend the Lefty Kreh demos).

I will offer up these advices: Fly casting is not inherently difficult. What is difficult, in my experience, is not doing other things while performing the steps of casting a fly. For example, follow-through. A natural and vital part of many hurling, launching varieties of activities. But not fly casting. A good cast requires an abrupt, unceremonious STOP at the forward and backward casting strokes. Instead of throwing a ball, think of swatting a fly, cracking a whip, flicking a spoonful of ice cream at someone.

But go forth, watch videos, get instruction, practice, make messes and swear. But DO it and you’ll get there.

I look forward to your responses.

What is Fly Fish Q&A?

I’ve been fishing all my life, one of my earliest memories is a bluegill on a little red and white spoon, me holding it in a stunned amazement while parents and other grownup hollered and praised.

The fly flinging came later on. At twelve I decided that this was an avenue that I needed to pursue. And hence this blog. I had no one to mentor, no one that I could "hide and watch". I’ve hacked and trudged through on my own, often despairing, until the Internet came along. Things have picked up since!

So I will post what I find to be useful, will field questions, draw upon my connections to various experts in the field, to give the beginner or neophyte a smoother transition into confidence and competence at angling with the fly.
